Legal Advice with Attorney Keisha Perry

In a recent interview, I had the opportunity to talk to Entertainment Attorney Keisha Perry of The Perry Law Groupwww.perrylawgroup.com based in downtown Atlanta, Ga.  Attorney Perry’s firm has been in operation since 2005 and she is very passionate about her line of work. She is also very knowledgeable when it comes to entertainment and sports law. I spoke to Attorney Perry in regards to the necessary steps to start a booking agency as one of my businesses. She shared with me some of the legal loopholes that I need to be aware of during the initiating phase of the business (Keisha Perry, personal communication, November 28th, 2011).
For example, one of the first topics we spoke about was Trademarking, Attorney Perry expressed how important it is that a company is trademarked, and the reason being is to provide full protection for the company and its ideas from competitors. The first step to building a solid foundation is to select a name that not only says something about you as a company but it supports the product that you supply (Keisha Perry, personal communication, November 28th, 2011).
Another area that we discussed was copyrighting, she stated that this is very important in the music industry. The reason being is that it is important to ensure the music is protected correctly to avoid duplication.  Thereby, you are ensuring that no other artist can reproduce it and take credit for it. Also by properly copyrighting an artist’s music it ensures that they receive all financial compensation (Keisha Perry, personal communication, November 28th, 2011).

Another topic we discussed is the importance of business related documents.  For example, Attorney Perry explained how important it is to have all paperwork in order such as, contracts, non-compete agreement, confidentiality forms, and any other documents that are only for company use and disclosure (Keisha Perry, personal communication, November 28th, 2011).
In conclusion, after speaking with Attorney Perry and receiving some very insightful and knowledgeable legal advice I feel I have obtained a better understanding of what I will need to prepare for when it comes to starting a booking agency.
